I'm back after a bit of a lengthy absence. I have good excuses. I bought a house (my first!) and moved (for the second time this year {double sigh}), and as such, all of my stuff (including my sewing machine and my camera) are in boxes. So please forgive, and I promise to have everything back up and running soon. Because, frankly, I'm going nuts without my sewing stuff available.
To make it up to you, I at least have a giveaway for stickin' with me! I'm giving away a copy of the spring issue of Stitch Craft Create to one of y'all. The lovelies over at SCC were kind enough to do a feature on Modern Designs for Classic Quilts, and I have a copy to share.
This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for participating!
Happy stitching!

My tip is that there is nothing wrong with a little dust, you don't need to vacuum more then once a week. And it's always nice to have clean dishes in the morning. 3bakergirlsgo@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on buying your own home, how exciting! We moved into our home August last year, and we still have a few unpacked boxes lying around. So I guess my advice is don't be too hard on yourself! :P

Take care of the little problems before they become big problems :-) Ask me how I know...
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Paint the rooms before you move your stuff into them. That way they will get painted sooner than later. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteYay for you - your first house and your own home! My tip would be to unpack EVERYTHINg otherwise you will still have boxes 25 years later that were neer unpacked (trust me, I have boxes like this)! Oh and get lots of before and after photos - you'll love to see the changes over the years from the very beginning.
ReplyDeleteAs it is your own home, my suggestion is to not be afraid of colour. I too often hear, 'We painted everything white as it will be good for resale'. Until you decide to sell, if you decide to sell, it is yours. Personalise it with colours and things you like. It is better to be accused of bad taste than no taste. (Crafty people are unlikely to fall into this trap as they make beautiful things that reflect their personalities.)
ReplyDeleteI still remember the fun I had painting my first home's bathroom a bright yellow.
Cecilia and Amy are 100% right about painting and unpacking.
My tip is: go through your mail before you bring it in the house. Pitch the junk mail in the trash bin before it gets inside...
ReplyDeleteCongrat's on your new home.
Remember to change your furnace filter once a month and have your furnace serviced once a year.
ReplyDeleteGet to know your neighborhood and your neighbors. Don't be afraid to call them when you need a cup of powdered sugar that you don't have on hand or a packet of yeast or whatever. Share with them, invite them over for a beer or pizza, and hopefully they'll become friendly with you too. Sit outside on your porch and talk to people (skip the freaky ones, of course!). If you don't love your neighborhood and your neighbors, it will be hard to love where you live. May you love your new condo!
ReplyDeleteI second the idea that you should get to know who your neighbors are. Also find the nearest grocery, farmer's market, dry cleaner, etc. Make sure you follow up on any issues the inspection before closing may have raised. Good Luck and Congratulations! - Victoria vicmil at aol dot com
ReplyDeleteMy tip is to get your main areas (kitchen, living room) sorted and unpacked, pictures hung, etc. Then work on one room at a time after that. Enjoy your new home!
ReplyDeleteMy tip is to hang some artwork and photos on the walls -- it will instantly feel more cozy and personal. You can always move them later!
ReplyDeleteI am a new homeowner (in our house about 3 weeks now). My tip is unpack quickly and get stuff hung on walls right away. Once you no longer feel like you are living from boxes, life seems so much more normal...
ReplyDeleteif you have some of your quilt's get them out first and they will make it seem more like home
ReplyDeleteHELLO! HINT: IN BACK OF TOILET TANK INSERT A WHITE VINEGAR GALLON JUG TURNED UPSIDE DOWN WITH A SMALL HOLE PUNCHED IN THE LID AND IT WILL KEEP YOUR TOILET BOWL CLEAN AND NO WATER RINGS!

Congratulations. I can't wait to see it. My tip- keep a notebook with a list of every good plumber, painter, electrician, etc that you hear of. Ask around before you desparately need one. Also, keep your paint colors in here. There is nothing worse than needing more and not being able to remember which yellow you finally decided on.
ReplyDeleteI now wash my floors with diluted vinegar to avoid using harsh chemicals and to save money.... awolk at rogers dot com
ReplyDeleteWhen the dishes in the dishwasher are clean, empty it immediately. Otherwise, you'll start stacking dirty dishes on the counter, then find yourself with a cluttered counter, two jobs that need to be done, and a sense of chaos where there could be order.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on becoming a home owner! Whenever I move from one room to another, I always look around to see if there is anything that needs to go in that direction. If you never leave a room with empty hands, you will not get stuck with any giant clean ups!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Kelly!! Homeownership is challenging but rewarding because it's yours! My advice is to not stress yourself out about getting it "done." Your home is never really done. We've been in our house for 7 years and I have to say there is always some sort of renovation, decorating, or improvement going on. It used to stress me out, but I've learned to accept it and enjoy the process. It's a wonderful evolution! Enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteCheck the battery on your smoke detectors when you change your clocks for daylight savings time!
ReplyDeleteI learned a new housekeeping tip recently and it works awesome! To clean off the mildew on a shower head, get a plastic full of white vinegar and place the baggy around the shower head and secure it with a rubberband and leave it for a few hours. All the nasty stuff will will dissolve off the shower head. It's like magic! Hope you're enjoying your new home!
ReplyDeleteTip - Every day, do a little cleaning. :) Don't save it all for one day.
ReplyDeleteAllow yourself to be 'good enough' so you have more time for the FUN things in life!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new home. My tip is to choose something special to commemorate this special event. I've always chosen a small piece of art . . . but I'd recommend a quilt. If you move a couple of times throughout the years, it will be fun to look back and see how you've evolved with your art!
ReplyDeleteIf you have 2 bathrooms get 2 plungers. If you have septic tank, it gets cleaned out about every 10 years. Other than those things I have learned, I don't know what to tell you :)
ReplyDeleteThoughts I'd take my chances and enter since you haven't announced the winner yet....
ReplyDeleteKeep fresh plants in your home, it'll give the place fresh oxygen and purify the air. Just a few small plants, not a forest of anything. Congratulations!
